ISOLATION MOTOR GENERATOR

Series IMG

The Series IMG motor generator provides total electrical isolation from voltage variations and electrical disturbances on your normal utility source via the coupling between motor and generator. The rugged industrial MG set can tolerate a 40% drop from normal input voltage for 30 seconds without affecting the load. While designed primarily as a power conditioner, systems do provide ride-through from 5.5 to 8.0 cycles, depending on the size and type of system. Series IMG motor generator systems are available as induction-sync or synchronous-synchronous MG set configured in either vertical or horizontal layouts. Systems are available up to 2000kVA for low voltage applications up to 600V. For medium voltage applications, please consult the factory.

The Series IMG motor generator was initially developed for the United States Government in support of the critical battle simulators used around the world. These power conditioner systems have received awards as high as the Golden Eagle Award for excellence. By making use of Motor Generator technology, PS&C systems deliver quality power and avoid the trouble spots.

RIDE-THRU MG SET

Series IMG-RT

The Series IMG-RT Ride Thru Motor Generator integrates state-of-the-art controls, a single-shaft motor generator and a mechanical flywheel into a power conditioning system that can deliver up to 5 seconds of ride-thru during an interruption of power.

The typical induction-synchronous MG set delivers this ride-thru with a maximum frequency drop at full load of 1%, or 0.6Hz on a 60Hz system. For sensitive applications where no frequency variation is acceptable, a synchronous-synchronous MG set is available. Series IMG-RT ride thru motor generator systems are sized and customized to meet a wide range of customer driven application criteria. MG sets are available in size ranges up to 2500 kVA for low voltage applications up to 600V. For medium voltage applications, please consult the factory.

DC FLYWHEEL

Series EPM - DC Energy Storage Module

The Series EPM is a stand alone power module designed to replace or supplement batteries in UPS systems. It is an energy storage system that creates power by means of kinetic energy conversion rather than the chemical reaction process utilized by existing battery strings. PS&C’s Flywheel topology is an extremely reliable source of emergency power designed to support the DC voltage long enough for the standby engine generator to start and be transferred on line, even after the engine generator has been in service for a few years. The Flywheel is driven by an induction motor through a (VFD) variable frequency drive. The DC output is derived from a three phase synchronous output converted via a rectifier. As the standard construction is a two bearing, single shaft machine, there are few serviceable components in the unit, making maintenance requirements minor. PS&C’s Series EPM combines the latest engineering methods with “Brute Force”. The EPM offers the durability and rigidness of a battery without the maintenance required or the potential problems associated with them.

    Series MG

The Series MG is the most Robust industrial machine available for isolating the utility from the load. Our solution is ideal for any serious commercial/industrial power users who have no need for the alternative of a UPS system which brings additional problems and concerns to Industrial customers. According to EPRI, power outages are a result of sags or power losses in very short duration. Statistics shown in a typical one month periods the a power consumer will have the probability at 90% that their business/factory will experience sags that will drop the input voltage under 80% of rated nominal voltage. This is very serious when we consider the potential threat of an outage as the same EPRI stats are weighted toward power interruptions in excess of 2 seconds.

The Series MG provides total electrical isolation from spikes, brownouts, voltage fluctuations and electrical disturbances on the commercial utility network. This is accomplished via a coupling between the motor and generator. The ride-through of the Series MG provides power outage protection for short outages such as utility re-closure operations.

    • Brushless synchronous motor
    • Brushless synchronous generator
    • PLC control and internal fault monitors
    • Precision solid-state voltage regulator
    • Cycle on/off with no load interruption
    • Electrically operated input and output circuit breakers

    DYNAMIC POWER FACTOR CORRECTION

    Series SC

The Synchronous Condenser (SC) dynamically provides power factor correction without the use of static components. As it is dynamic, the precise operation of the Synchronous Condenser (SC) excitation field will produce the required pf VAR needed to correct the power factor to the set level or desired amount without switching transients. Also, as it is a Dynamic device, there is no problem with harmonic currents produces by (VFD's), dirty loads or static (solid state) drives. The Synchronous Condenser (SC) uses rotary technology which improves overall power quality by reducing voltage transients and eliminating problems associated with harmonic distortion which exist in all manufacturing processes.

    How It Works
A Series SC is an unloaded or lightly loaded synchronous machine that will deliver the required reactive power dynamically. The SC is connected to the power line and is intentionally run in an overexcited condition. The level of excitation is dependent on the amount of power factor correction desired and the amount of power factor sensed by the condenser controls. The condenser will adjust the excitation level automatically to maintain the power factor at the correct setting. Once the Series SC is installed, it continuously monitors the power factor and produces the right amount of VAR needed to correct any power factor without switching transients and is not troubled by harmonic currents produced by solid state motor drives. The Series SC also helps overall power quality by reducing voltage transients and by reducing the problems associated with harmonic distortion found in many manufacturing process. The Series SC is available from 100 kVAR to 10,000 kVAR modules, from 480 volts up to 15 KV.

Applying a synchronous condenser for power factor correction provides many advantages with no risks. Correcting power factor with a condenser is much smoother and will not adversely affect a system loaded with current harmonics. The condenser is a low impedance source and appears inductive to loads. In addition the Series SC is easy to maintain (a simple annual lubrication) and adapts easily to a plant’s changing loads. (Dynamic Correction) The SC has many user friendly features such as the automatic restart after power loss. The SC also has a state-of-the-art integrated touch screen display and control interface. The controls are designed to be friendly and easily understood so that the user can control the SC from this panel. The touch screen will display voltage, current, power factor, and power information as a minimum.
